Post Procedure

INSTRUCTIONS

Following endodontic  treatment, your tooth and the surrounding gum tissue may be tender for several days and can typically take up to a few weeks to resolve as your body undergoes the natural healing process. Start chewing on soft foods to get the tooth slowly back to function and symptoms should decrease over time. Over the counter pain medications such Tylenol and Ibuprofen will help the healing process. If prescribed medication is necessary, please advise the doctor.

  • Do not lift or pull lip to examine surgical area because repeated irritations may delay healing or rip a stitch.

  • Slight swelling and skin discoloration is normal. In order to minimize swelling, apply an ice pack over the surgical area with gentle pressure; 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for the rest of the day.

  • Adequate food and fluid intake following surgery is most important. Soft cold foods are best, such as ice cream, jello, pudding and yogurt. Stay away from anything hard, crunchy, spicy and hot foods (ie: tea, coffee, soup, peanuts, tortilla chips, etc.) If eating is difficult, a diet supplement (ie. protein shakes) is recommended.

  • Do not use a straw.

  • Brush and floss as normal, very gently around surgical site starting the day of surgery.

  • Avoid rinsing with Scope, Listerine, Hydrogen Peroxide and Salt water during the first 48 hours. Use the Peridex as indicated.

  • Sleep with the head slightly elevated the first night following surgery.

  • No smoking and alcohol for the first 48 hours following surgery.

  • Any unusual symptoms such as excessive bleeding, swelling, or elevated temperature should be reported immediately.

  • Slight oozing or bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours. If bleeding persists, please call the office or the doctors after hours number.

  • Do not apply heat under any circumstances.

  • Mild discomfort following surgery is normal. If you have been given a prescription, take as directed.

  • Please call the morning after surgery to report your progress.
